Veteran Bollywood actress Nanda, who was last seen in ‘Prem Rog’ in 1983 died in Mumbai on Tuesday 25th March 2014. Nanda was 75 years old. She died natural death. Nanda was populary known for her performances in films like Ittefaq, Joru Ka Ghulam,Neend Hamare Khwab Tumhare, Kanoon, Pati Patni, Gumnaam, Akashdeep,Bedaag and Raja Saab.


Nanda was born on January 8, 1939  in Kolhapur, Maharastra. She was born to Marathi actor and director Master Vinayak and was the niece of film making pioneer V Shantaram.

Nanda’s paternal uncle V. Shantaram gave Nanda a big break by casting her in a successful brother-sister saga Toofan Aur Diya (1956). After Toofan Aur Diya, Nanda went on to establish herself in the Hindi film industry with hits like Jab Jab Phool Khile, Gumnaam, Teen Deviyan, The Train, Mandir, Angarey, Ram Laxman, Bandi, Ittefaq, Hum Dono, Prayashchit, Ahista Ahista, Prem Rog and Mazdoor among others.

She received her first Filmfare Award nomination as Best Supporting Actress for Bhabhi (1957), Aanchal (1960), Ittefaq (1969), Ahista Ahista (1981) and Prem Rog (1982).  She won Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for Aanchal.

In 1992,  Nanda got engaged to director Manmohan Desai. But he died after falling from the terrace of his rented flat in Girgaon. And Nanda remained unmarried for the rest of her life.
