2012 has been an excellent year for Bollywood. Big budget ‘superstar’ films rocked the box office, while small-budget content driven films like Barfi, Kahaani, Oh My God and Vicky Donor were surprise hits. Here is a list of Top 10 Biggest Box Office Hits 2012.
1: Ek Tha Tiger : Ek Tha Tiger is a 2012 Indian action film, directed by Kabir Khan and produced by Aditya Chopra of Yash Raj Films. It stars the former real-life couple Katrina and Salman in the lead roles and Ranvir Shorey, Girish Karnad, Roshan Seth and Gavie Chahal in supporting roles. Salman played an Indian spy named Tiger, who falls head over heels in love with a female spy from Pakistan, essayed by Katrina. the film opened on August 15, 2012, coinciding with the Independence Day of India. Ek Tha Tiger was declared an “All-time Blockbuster” by Box Office India and is the most successful film of Yash Raj Films. The film went on to become the second Bollywood film to gross over Rs. 300 crore worldwide behind only 3 Idiots thus becoming the second highest-grossing Bollywood film of all time.
2: Rowdy Rathore : Rowdy Rathore is a 2012 Indian action film directed by Prabhu Deva and produced by Rajat Rawail, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Ronnie Screwvala. It features Akshay Kumar in double roles opposite Sonakshi Sinha and Paresh Ganatra, Yashpal Sharma, Gurdeep Kohli in supporting role with Tamil actorNassar as antagonist. The music was composed by Sajid-Wajid and lyrics are penned by Faaiz Anwar and Sameer Anjaan. It marks the return of Akshay Kumar in the action genre after seven years. Made on a budget of Rs. 40 crore, Rowdy Rathore released on 1 June 2012 on 2700 screens worldwide. It received mixed response from critics, whilst opening to strong box office collections and became a major commercial success with a worldwide gross of Rs. 201 crore. The film was declared a “Blockbuster” in India and “average” in Overseas by Box Office India.
3: Agneepath : Agneepath is a 2012 Indian action drama film produced by Hiroo Yash Johar and Karan Johar under the banner of Dharma Productions. It is a retelling of the 1990 film of the same name and was directed by Johar’s former assistant Karan Malhotra. The screenplay was written by Malhotra along with Ila Dutta Bedi. The music of the film was composed by Ajay-Atul, with lyrics written by Amitabh Bhattacharya. Hrithik Roshan plays the lead role of Vijay Deenanath Chauhan and Sanjay Dutt plays the role of the antagonist Kancha Cheena, originally played by Amitabh Bachchan and Danny Denzongpa respectively, with Rishi Kapoor portraying the newly introduced character of Rauf Lala. The supporting cast include Om Puri as Commissioner Gaitonde, Priyanka Chopra as Kaali Gawde and Zarina Wahab as Suhasini Chauhan, with Katrina Kaif featuring in an item number. Agneepath released on 26 January 2012 in 2650 screens worldwide, coinciding with the Republic Day celebrations. Made on a budget of Rs. 60 crore, the film broke the highest opening day collections record in India and became a major critical and commercial success with a worldwide gross of Rs. 193 crore. Box Office India declared the film as a “super hit”.
4: Housefull 2 : Housefull 2 is a 2012 Indian comedy film directed by Sajid Khan and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala. It is the sequel to the 2010 film, Housefull and stars Akshay Kumar, Asin Thottumkal, John Abraham, Jacqueline Fernandez, in the lead roles, whilst Ritesh Deshmukh, Zarine Khan, Shreyas Talpade, Shazahn Padamsee, Randhir Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, Mithun Chakraborty and Boman Irani play supporting roles. The music is composed by Sajid-Wajid. Upon release the film received mixed reviews, however, the response was more positive than its predecessor and it opened very well at the box office and was declared a Super Hit at the Box Office. Housefull 2 grossed Rs.113.88 crore in India.
5: Barfi! : Barfi! is a 2012 Indian romantic comedy film written and directed by Anurag Basu. It tells the story of “Barfi”, a mute and deaf boy in Darjeeling, West Bengal and his relation with two girls, one of whom is autistic. The film stars Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Ileana D’Cruz in lead roles. Made on a budget of Rs. 30 crore, the film was released on 14 September 2012 across 1300 screens in India. The film is sent as India’s official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film nomination for the 85th Academy Awards in February 2013. Barfi! also was a box-office success, becoming one of the highest-grossing Bollywood films of all time in India and was declared a “Super Hit” after its three week run by Box Office India made collections of Rs 110 crore.
6: Jab Tak Hai Jaan : Jab Tak Hai Jaan is a 2012 Indian romantic drama film, directed by Yash Chopra and written and produced by Aditya Chopra under their production banner Yash Raj Films. The film features Shahrukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma in lead roles. Jab Tak Hai Jaan was Yash Chopra’s last directorial venture before his death on 21 October 2012. The background score and soundtrack is composed by A.R. Rahman, while the lyrics are penned by Gulzar. The film was released during the six-day Diwali weekend that began on 13 November 2012. Jab Tak Hai Jaan received positive to mixed reviews from critics in India and positive reviews from critics overseas. Box Office India declared the film a “hit” in India and a “blockbuster” overseas. However, Yash Raj Films and independent trade analysts called the film a “worldwide blockbuster”. There was confusion over the Jab Tak Hai Jaan figures in India. While Box Office India stated that the film made around Rs. 100 crore, trade analysts Taran Adarsh and Komal Nahta claimed it reached approximately Rs. 120 crore during the same period.
7: Bol Bachchan : Bol Bachchan is a 2012 Bollywood action comedy film directed by Rohit Shetty, and featuring Abhishek Bachchan, Ajay Devgn, Asin and Prachi Desai in lead roles. The film, made on a massive budget of Rs. 70 crore, is an official remake of the popular 1979 film Gol Maal. Bol Bachchan was released on 6 July 2012 in around 2575 screens worldwide with 2700 prints. It received mixed critical acclaim but had a good opening at the box office. The film supposedly created a record for its advance bookings. Bol Bachchan has become one of the highest-grossing Bollywood film of all time in India. Boxofficeindia declared the film as a “hit”. Ajay’s one-liner English dialogues and Abhishek’s double dhamaal paved the way for crossing the Rs.100-crore mark for this film.
8: Son Of Sardaar : Son of Sardaar is a 2012 Bollywood action comedy film directed by Ashwni Dhir. The film features Ajay Devgan, Juhi Chawla, Sanjay Dutt and Sonakshi Sinha in lead roles. Salman Khan also appears in a cameo role, and a song sequence. The film released on 13 November 2012. Whilst having competition with the Yash Raj film Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Son of Sardaar managed to do excellent business at the box office worldwide. Box Office India rated Son of Sardaar as Hit in India, and did reasonable business in the Overseas Markets. Made on a budget of 30 crores, the film netted a total of Rs.105 crore at the end of its run.
9: Talaash : Talaash: The Answer Lies Within is a 2012 Indian neo-noir mystery film directed by Reema Kagti and produced by Excel Entertainment and Aamir Khan Productions. The movie stars Aamir Khan, Rani Mukerji and Kareena Kapoor in lead roles and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Vivan Bhatena, Shernaz Patel andRaj Kumar Yadav in supporting roles. The soundtrack of the movie is scored by Ram Sampath, with lyrics penned by Javed Akhtar. The movie released on 30 November 2012. Box Office India declared Talaash a “semi hit” grosser in India and “super hit” in overseas. Made on a budget of rs. 40 crore, the film made around Rs. 90 crore at the Indian box office whilst its satellite rights were sold for Rs. 40 crore.
10: OMG: Oh My God! : OMG: Oh My God! is a 2012 Bollywood comedy film that satirizes certain religious beliefs. It is directed by Umesh Shukla & co-produced by Akshay Kumarand Paresh Rawal. The movie features Paresh Rawal in the lead role and Akshay Kumar in a cameo as Lord Krishna; along with Mithun Chakraborty, Lubna Salim, Poonam Jhawer, Govind Namdeo, Mahesh Manjrekar, Nidhi Subbaiah, Murli Sharma and Om Puri in supporting roles. The movie also features Prabhu Deva and Sonakshi Sinha in a special appearance in the song “Go Govinda”. The film received positive response from critics upon release. Box Office India declared the film a Superhit after its three week run. Made on a budget of Rs. 20 crore, the film earned Rs. 83 crore in India.
Note: Dabangg 2 has not been included in the list because the film is yet to complete it’s theatrical run. Most likely to take the second spot.
