Shravani Teej or Hariyali Teej is a women’s festival, celebrated in Rajasthan, parts of Uttar pradesh and Bihar with both fasts and delicious feasts. Teej is celebrated on the 3rd day of Shukla Paksha in Bhadrapad or Bhado (August or early September). In the year 2012, this festival will be celebrated on Sunday, 22 July. This festival is mainly celebrated by women in which everything can be seen full of life because of the Shravan month.

Story Behind Teej Festival

Since Teej fall at the outbreak of the monsoons, it is also popularly known as the ‘Sawan Festival’. According to Hindu mythology, in the month of Shravan, Goddess Parvati reunited with Lord Shiva after a penance of hundred years. In her 108th birth, Lord Shiva realized her devotion for him and accepted her as his wife. This legend is said to be the basis of Teej celebrations.

Teej Fast

Women fast on this day. Married woman fast for their husband and a happy married life. Unmarried girls fast in order to get a good husband in the future. This festival is known as Hariyali Teej in the eastern part of the country. Nature can be seen flourishing during this period. Women can be seen enjoying themselves with songs, swings etc.
