Onam, the biggest and the most significant festival of Kerala. It is a harvest festival and is celebrated with alot of happiness and zeal all over the Kerela by people of all communities.The festival is celebrated to welcome King Mahabali, whose spirit is said to visit Kerala at the very time of Onam.
The festival, Onam is celebrated at the beginning of the month of Chingam, it is the first month of Malayalam Calendar (Kollavarsham). This is parallel to the month of August-September as per the Gregorian Calendar.
Festival of Onam lasts from four to ten days. The First day, Atham and tenth day, Thiruonam are most the important of all days celebrated in the festival. Appearance of high culture of the state during the carnival made Onam the National Festival of Kerala at 1961. Elaborate celebration, folk songs, classic dances, energetic games, elephants, boats and flowers all are a part of the dynamic festival called Onam.
Govt of India has taken outstanding notice of this lively and colorful festival. It elevates Onam internationally in a new big way and celebrates ‘Tourist Week’ for Kerala during Onam celebrations. More than Thousands of domestic and foreign tourists visit Kerala to become a part of Onam.
