Anu Malik was born on 2nd November 1960. He was born as Anwar Malik. His father, Sardar Malik, was also a composer. He received training under Pandit Ram Prasad Sharma. His wife’s name is Anju Anu Malik.

The first movie for which Anu Malik composed music for was Sohni Mahiwal (1984). In the 90s, he saw back to back success with movies like Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayi, Baazigar (1993), Mein Khiladi Tu Anari (1994), Akele Hum Akele Tum (1995), Kareeb (1997), Border (1997), China Gate (1998) and Josh (1999), LOC-Kargil (2003), etc. He sang the popular track Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhen in Baazigar. The music won him the Filmfare Best Music Director Award. The song Chamma Chamma was used in the Hollywood musical Moulin Rouge. He received praise for Asoka (2001), Aks (2001) and Murder (2004). After handling Victory (2009), his next musical extravaganza is Kambakkth Ishq (2009). Malik has frequently worked with Alisha Chinai, Sonu Nigam and Kunal Ganjawala.
Anu Malik has remained one of the judges on the TV show throughout each season. In the first two seasons, he was accompanied by Sonu Nigam and Farah Khan, and in the third by Alisha Chinai, Udit Narayan and Javed Akhtar. He was also a judge in the First Asian Idol held in Indonesia, representing Indian Idol. He also appeared on Indian Idol 4 with Sonali Bendre, Kailash Kher & Javed Akhtar. Now again he is appearing as a judge with Sunidhi Chauhan and Salim Merchant.
Anu Malik has won The National Film Award for Best Music Direction for the film Refugee (2001), and won The Filmfare Best Music Director Award twice for Main Hoon Na (2004) and Baazigar (1993). He also got Special Jury Award (Filmfare) in 2000 for his outstanding contribution in music.
