Miss Michigan 2010 Rima Fakih, who is of Lebanese Muslim descent, has been crowned Miss USA 2010.
Fakih resides in Dearborn, Michigan, which is home to a large Arab-American community.
The win is being seen as a welcome event especially at a time when Arabs in the US have been stereotyped in a negative light ever since the terror attacks on September 11, 2001.
The 24-year-old was born in New York in 1986, raised in Dearborn with her parents and her younger brother Rami.
Fakih is the first ever Arab-American to win the title, the first ever Muslim-American Miss USA and the first Miss Michigan to become Miss USA since Kenya Moore in 1993.
This year’s Miss USA competition has had some serious publicity this year, mostly over the sexy promo bikini pictures. I guess instead of a scandal over some racy photos, they figured they would put them out there themselves. But back to the subject at hand.
The 2010 Miss USA winner Rima Fakih, is a gorgeous brunette, who was up against four beautiful blondes in the end. First runner-up Miss Oklahoma, Morgan Elizabeth Woolard, second runner-up Miss Virginia Samantha Evelyn Casey, third runner-up was Miss Colorado Jessica Hartman and finally fourth place was Miss Maine Katherine Ashley Whittier.
For the question part of the competition, Rima was asked whether she thought birth control should be paid for by health insurance. Her response was yes because it is expensive, and “I believe that birth control is just like every other medication even though it’s a controlled substance.”
As for a biography on Rima Fakih, here is a bit of information. She is a 24 year old Lebanese-American born in New York. She currently resides in Michigan, where she took on the Miss Michigan title on September 19, 2009. Her profile stated that winning the state title was a childhood dream, and she hopes to “positively use her position of influence to advocate community service, charity and educational growth.”
