Commomwealth Games 2010 New Delhi: Sheela Dikshit & M S Gill Inaugurated The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium  Report After several conspiracies, the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, the main venue for Common Wealth Games was finally inaugrated by Sports Minister M S Gill & Delhi Chief Minister Sheela Dikshit on Tuesday 27/July/2010.

It is situated on Lodhi Road, near the C.G.O complex in New Delhi. It is named after the first prime minister of India. The facility seats 78,000 spectators, and up to 130,000 for concerts. In terms of seating capacity, it is the third largest stadium in India and the 51th largest in the world. The stadium also houses the headquarters of the Indian Olympic Association. The stadium will also host the upcoming 2010 Commonwealth Games. In preparation for the Games, the stadium is undergoing a refurbishment that will reduce the capacity to 72,000 spectators. It will be completed in early 2010.

Nehru stadium spans over an area of 4,04,686 sqm. The oval shaped building will play host to a slew of sports events including weightlifting and lawn tennis. It has a two tier seating capacity for 60,000 spectators. The stadium comprises of three independent structures of the main stadium building, are the lower tier, main building and supporting structure for PTFE membrane roof while the Field of Play is divided into Competition, Training and Warm up area.
The opening and closing ceremonies, athletics, lawn bowls, and weightlifting will take place at the massive Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. This stadium has different grounds for different sports with varying spectator capacity.
