Indians are not behind in fashion these days. Fashion in India has become a growing industry with International events such as the India Fashion Week and Annual Shows by Fashion Designers in the major cities of India. Indian fashion designers such as Ritu Kumar, Ritu Beri, Rohit Bal, Rina Dhaka, Tarun Tahiliani, JJ Valaya and Manish Malhotra have made their mark in the global fashion arena.

Right from the traditional salwar kameez or sarees to churidars, kurtis, the semi formal way of wearing it over trousers or jeans, capris and the higly elegant and contemporary style of draping sarees, from simply cotton blouses to halter-neck, puffed sleeves, deep necks blouses. Fashion is become Fusion in India.

Top 10 Fashion Designers of India

Manish Malhotra

Manish Malhotra is considered to be India’s leading and most successful fashion designer. Manish is most probably known for designing the costumes for Urmila Matondkar in the film Rangeela. Stars including Kajol, Karisma Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Rani Mukherji, Aishwarya Rai, Sonam Kapoor and Preity Zinta have all worn his designs. Although he usually designs for women, he designed for Shahrukh Khan in Mohabbatein and Imran Khan in I Hate Luv Storys. He was also asked to design clothes for Michael Jackson when he visited India for a Bollywood show. His designs have been seen in films such as Raja Hindustani, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Dhadkan and Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai.

Wendell Rodricks

Wendell Rodricks is a prominent fashion designer based in the western Indian region of Goa. He has been listed among one of India’s top ten designers. Rodricks started as a catering graduate but later moved to fashion designing. Rodricks was the first India designer to be invited to IGEDO (the world’s largest garment fair); and the first Indian designer to open the Dubai Fashion Week. Rodricks has researched the theme of the history of the Goan costume for three years and interned at The National Costume Museum in Lisbon and The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York.

Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla

Abu Jani & Sandeep Khosla are amongst the most renowned fashion designers of India. Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla, this twosome group is famously known as “the boys” in the fashion circuit. They were one of the first to display their creations at Harrods. The duo are also known for dressing India’s best known faces such as Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Dimple Kapadia and Parmeshwar Godrej among the indian personalities as well as international figures such as Judi Dench who has worn their creations, at the Oscars. In December 2003 Abu-Sandeep were presented with the National award for best costumes for “Devdas” where they designed costumes for the pivotal characters of Madhuri Dixit, Shahrukh Khan and Jackie Shroff.

Tarun Tahiliani

Tarun Tahiliani is a noted Indian fashion designer. Tarun Tahiliani studied at the prestigious Doon School and then went on to obtain a degree in Business Management from the Wharton Business School, University of Pennsylvania. On returning to India, in 1987 he opened the first fashion boutique in India, ‘Ensemble‘, heralding a fashion and retail revolution in the country.

JJ Valaya

JJ Valaya is one of the senior-most fashion designers of India. Valaya’s passion for beautiful things and fixation for the rich Indian art and culture took him to the National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi where he graduated in fashion design. With his elder brother TJ Singh, JJ Valaya founded The House of Valaya in 1992 with the launch of its couture label. Photography is one hobby that JJ Valaya pursues with great enthusiasm.

Rina Dhaka

Rina Dhaka is India’s leading fashion designer who burst onto the fashion world in late 1980s. She is best known for her theme collections – sheer trousers, crochet, stretch jersey, woolens and spider web motifs. It was very early in her career when she got accolades for one of her design for the Miss India event from Rohit Khosla, the only ingenious designer of that time. Her first show in Singapore “The Best of Indian Haute Couture” met with a thumping success. Rina has also won a Yuva Rattan award in career, which is spread over almost three decades now.

Manish Arora

Manish Arora is an Indian fashion designer based in New Delhi, and is the creative director of the womens wear collection of the French Fashion House Paco Rabanne. Manish was studying to graduate in Commerce, when he decided to change his career path, and applied for National Institute of Fashion Technology in New Delhi and graduated in 1994, after winning the Best Student Award. Manish Arora, Fish Fry, Paco Rabanne were some of the labels launched by Manish Arora.

Rohit Bal

Rohit Bal is a fashion designer from New Delhi, India. He designs for men and women, and has bridal and evening collections in addition to day-wear and ready-to-wear. Rohit Bal Graduated from St. Stephens College, in History (hons). He also did a course from the National Institute of Fashion Technology, where he learned the art from cutting to stitching. Bal bagged the ‘Designer of the Year’ award at the Indian Fashion Awards in 2006. He was also made ‘Designer of the Year‘ at the Kingfisher Fashion Achievement Awards in 2001. Bal has also ventured into the designing jewellery for Kirtilals.

Ritu Beri

Ritu Beri is a New Delhi based International fashion designer. She is the first Asian designer to head the French fashion brand, Scherrer. Ritu Beri studied fashion arts at the NIFT, New Delhi. She is the only Indian designer to be featured in promostyl’s magazine Acustyl, which forecasts fashion trends worldwide. She is the author of the personal fashion book, 101 Ways to Look Good. She also serves on the board of Governors at NIFT, and is an honorary patron of the Savera Association, a popular charity involved in improving the lives of Indian woman. She wrote the Most Expensive Indian Book,Firefly – A Fairytale. The book is priced at Rs 1 lakh and is published by Ritu Beri herself.

Her notable international clients are former US President Bill Clinton, Prince Charles, Moulin Rouge, Nicole Kidman, Hollywood actress Andy McDowell, Supermodel Laetitia Casta, famous Parisian Socialite Mrs. Lagerdere, Langes Swarovski & The Swarovski family, Elizabeth Jagger and Jerry Hall. Her notable Indian clients are Madhuri Dixit, Rani Mukherji, Preity Zinta, Parmeshwar Godrej & Shobha De.

Ritu Kumar

Ritu Kumar is an Indian fashion designer, based in Delhi. Ritu attended Lady Irwin College, (University of Delhi) in New Delhi, graduating in 1964 & Briarcliff College, New York, USA in 1966. Kumar has been designing the wardrobes comprising swimwear, eveningwear, traditional Indian wear, casual wear, formal evening gowns; of the three winning Miss Indias, for their participation in International Beauty Pageants (Miss Universe, Miss World and Miss Asia Pacific respectively). Ritu’s outfits have been patronized by style icons such as late Princess Diana and Jemima Khan.
