Mr Ranjan Negi is a hockey player and former goalkeeper of the Indian National Field Hockey Team. He would later be involved with the development of the 2007 hit film, Chak de India. He is again appointed as a new coach of the national women’s hockey team on Wednesday..Former India goalkeeper Mir Ranjan Negi has thrown his hat in the ring to become the new coach of the national women’s hockey team after incumbent MK Kaushik resigned on Wednesday in the wake of a sex scandal.

Negi, who was also the goalkeeper of the national squad till 1982 said that he had worked with Kaushik in the past and could not believe the allegations hurled against him.

According to Hockey India (HI) secretary general Narinder Batra, Negi has approached the federation expressing his willingness to take up the job.

Hockey India (HI) has set up a high-level committee comprising experts and former players to probe the matter. The committee comprises of former hockey captains Zafar Iqbal and Ajit Pal Singh along with Sudarshan Pathak and Rajiv Mehta. By Anand Srivastava (ANI)

Later Career

He returned as a goalkeeping coach for the 1998 Asian Games in which the India national field hockey team won the Gold. This position, however, only proved temporary and he left the game once again. Four years later, Negi was hired to be the goalkeeping coach of the India women’s national field hockey team. The team won the Gold at the 2002 Commonwealth Games.  He was also the assistant coach for the Women’s team when it won the Gold at the 2004 Hockey Asia Cup.

Mir Ranjan Negi came in limelight after the success of Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Chak De India. In movie “Chak de India” Shahrukh Khan’s role as hockey coach Kabir Khan is inspired from the life of Mir Ranjan Negi. His life story is similar to the story shown in the movie to some extent. He was blamed in 1982 for 7-1 defeat on the hands of Pakistan in 1982 Asian games.

Mir Ranjan Negi, also participated in Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa 2, as he did not qualified for the final round of Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa 2 due to lack of popular votes in his favour. However, still Mir Ranjan Negi is a winner because hardly anyone had  expected that Mr Negi will be among the top four participants of Jhalak Dikhlaa jaa 2.
