Bodoland Peoples Front MLA Pradeep Brahma arrested for role in Assam violence



Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF) MLA Pradeep Brahma was arrested in the wee hours on Thursday for his alleged involvement in the recent violence in the state. Pradeep Brahma was arrested from his house at Dotoma near Kokrajhar town at about 1am as seven cases had already been registered against him in several police stations. His arrest was made on the basis of statements of witnesses.

Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF) is the ruling party of the Bodoland Territorial Autonomous District (BTAD) whose chief is Hagrama Mohilary. The party is also a partner in the state’s Congress-led government.

Following the arrest and Wednesday’s violence in neighboring Dhubri district in which two persons were killed, indefinite curfew was clamped in Kokrajhar district.

Talking to media after MLA’s arrest, Inspector General of Police LR Bishnoi said, “Brahma was held after seven cases were registered against him in Fakiragram and Dotama police stations in Kokrajhar district.”

The protestors blocked railway tracks across the state following the arrest of the MLA, demanding his release.

More than 80 persons have lost their lives and four lakh were rendered homeless in the violence in lower Assam districts of Korajhar, Dhubri and Chirang. Five cases have been registered against the Pradeeep Brahma is from the Bodoland People’s Front.
