27 years old Mahesh Thapa, a striker with Chhayachhobi Club accidentally collided with Parasmoni club keeper Sachin Rai during a football match played at the Netaji Vidyapath Ground, Torapara, on the outskirts of Jalpaiguri.
With no ambulance facility in the ground, Thapa, a resident of the Race Course locality was first taken to the Jalpaiguri “Sadar Hospital” on a motorcycle by one of his friend but couldn’t be admitted to the ICU due to shortage of beds and he was then driven to a private nursing home called “Marina”. Unfortunately, the ICU was full there also. Finally, Mahesh stopped breathing on the way to another private facility called “Touch”. He was then again brought back to the “Sadar Hospital” where he was declared dead.
According to the source, the goalkeeper’s knee hit Mahesh’s chest & he fell down after that.
Mahesh’s body was handed over to his family this morning and was taken to the clubs he had played for and also to the office of the sports association before the last rites. Father Chandra Bahadur Thapa, a retired constable, said he had had a lot of dreams for his younger son.
“He was always keen on doing well in football. I had a lot of dreams surrounding him.”
The incident comes barely four months after Bangalore footballer Venkatesh passed away during a match due to cardiac arrest. Venkatesh, could not be revived after suffering a cardiac arrest, and the lack of basic medical facilities played a part.
In 2004, Dempo’s Brazilian striker Cristiano Junior too had passed away on the field after colliding with then Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Subrata Paul.
