Ace Indian badminton player and World No. 2 Saina Nehwal was on Friday selected for the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award, the country’s sporting honour, for her oustanding achievements on the badminton court.
Saina Nehwal will receive the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award from President Pratibha Patil on National Sports Day on August 29 at the Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi.
Sania has so far enjoyed an excellent run in 2010, winning a hat-trick of titles including Indian Open, Singapore Open Super Series and Indonesia Open Super Series. The 20-year-old also entered the semi-finals of All-England Super Series 2010 and won bronze at the Asian Championships.
They panel on Friday also announced names of the 15 Arjuna awardees for this year, who will be conferred with the honour on the same day. August 29 is the birth anniversary of Hockey Legend Dhyan Chand and is celebrated as National Sports Day.
The Arjuna Awardees are:
Krishna Punia (Athletics), Dinesh Kumar (Boxing), Parimarjan Negi (Chess), Jhulan Goswami (Cricket), Deepak Mondal (Football), Sunil Chettri (Football), Rajiv Tomar (Wrestling), Sandeep Singh (Hockey), Jasjit Kaur (Hockey), Joseph Abraham (Athletics), Jajseer Singh (Paralympics), Dinesh (Kabaddi), Kapil Dev (Volleyball), Rehan Poncha (Swimming), Sanjeev Rajput (Shooting).
Saina was awarded the Arjuna Award last year and recently she was chosen as one of the six brand ambassador for the Commonwealth Games which will be held from October 3-14. National coach and her mentor Pullela Gopichand also heaped praise on his protege and said it is the result of her hard work that she achieved the award.
The award, to be given away on August 29 by the President Pratibha Patil, consists of a cash amount of Rs 7.5 lakh, a scroll of honour and medal.
