The Ganga now is running 2.3 metres over the danger mark in Haridwar, triggering flood-like circumstances are likely to happen in the near rural areas. Due to the circumstances high alert has been alarmed in Rishikesh and Haridwar.

Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj called on PM Manmohan Singh and requested him to take prompt action to tackle the flood situation in Uttarakhand. Singh assured her that he had asked Cabinet Secretary.

KM Chandrasekhar to look into the matter, sources said.

The Met centre has warned of more rain in the next two days. If the water level increases further, the Tehri dam authority will have no other option but to release more water.

DM R Meenakshi Sundaram of Haridwar said that the flood had overwhelmed about the whole district. About 400 citizens, as well as 60 tourists from Kerala, were saved from a variety of Ganga islets in Haridwar. An Army unit has been deployed into service to save 5 village residents in Laksar tehsil.

Kailash Mansarover Yatris have been abandoned in Chausali village in Almora district after heavy rain caused landslides.
